Walk A Mile In Her Shoes

Each year, Project Sanctuary, a local organization that provides domestic violence and sexual assault services to survivors in Mendocino County, hosts ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, A Men’s March to End Sexual Assault’. This year it is taking place on Saturday, April 26.

Tim Rohan, director of emergency services at Ukiah Valley Medical (UVMC) is an avid supporter of this event and sits on the Project Sanctuary governing board. “Many women in our community and surrounding counties suffer from abuse, whether verbal or physical. In the ER at UVMC we have the only Sexual Assault Response Team (SART examiners) available in a tri-county region outside of Santa Rosa. This team of highly skilled nurses works with law enforcement to care for victims of sexual assault.”

“Our team is on-call 24/7. It doesn’t matter what time of day the crime is reported, our team is always available,” said lead SART examiner, Kristen Marin, RN. “We have a large service area and have taken care of victims from Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and even Santa Cruz counties.” When asked how a sexual assault can be reported, Marin said, “You should always call 9-1-1, or victims can self-report in the ER at UVMC, where a member of our team would perform a full evaluation, and get you the help you need to move forward.”

In addition to providing assault victim exams in the ER, the SART examiners are active in providing education in our community, “I feel that educating our community, especially our teens, on the signs and how to avoid sexual assault is really important. In fact we have been able to present to the teens in the Scrubs classes at Ukiah High and Willits High, and plan on talking at Fort Bragg later this year,” shared Marin.
