Russell Named Vice President of Population Health Innovations of Adventist Health in Roseville, CA.


Tom Russell, President and CEO of Adventist Medical Center has been named Vice President of Population Health Innovations for the hospital’s parent company, Adventist Health headquartered in Roseville, California. Russell will focus on collaborative relationships leading to network growth and innovative payer integration effective January, 2014. In his new role, he will lead the development of market partnerships, create employer based health solutions, expand an Adventist Health blueprint for wellness, and focus on designing a holistic care model for high risk seniors throughout the multi-state enterprise including Oregon.

Russell transitions into the new role with more than 32 years of health care management experience. “Tom’s leadership has had a tremendous impact on delivery of mission driven, value-based healthcare,” says Scott Reiner, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Adventist Health and board chairman for the Adventist Medical Center operations. “He will be instrumental in delivering our mission through the establishment of relationships and innovation.”

Under his leadership, Adventist Medical Center has been recognized for performing in the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for patient safety and is now among the top 100 hospitals in America for the care of critically ill patients. As a member of the American College of HealthCare Executives, he actively advocates for the health interests of patients on the state and national level. Tom’s many accomplishments include the development of an engaged employee wellness program in Portland which has been improving employee health and providing value added services to the workforce. The innovative employee wellness structure has been implemented throughout the 19 hospitals of Adventist Health, resulting in substantially decreased healthcare costs for 32,000 employees.

Russell assumed his current position in 2008, overseeing the network of Adventist Health services throughout the Portland metropolitan area and is chairman of the board for Adventist Health’s Tillamook Regional Medical Center on the Oregon coast. His leadership has been evident in the development of Adventist Health’s integrated network in the Northwest.

He is a Founding Board Member of Health Share of Oregon, the state’s largest Community Care Organization and serves as a member of their Governance Committee. He is the recipient of the 2012 American Hospital Association’s Grassroots Champion award and is a member of the Health Policy Committee for the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems.
