St. Helena’s Coon Joint Replacement Institute Receives Blue Distinction Designation for Quality

The Blue Distinction® Designation Aids Consumers and Employers in Choosing High-Performing Hospitals

St. Helena, California

.-St. Helena Hospital’s Coon Joint Replacement Institute is proud to announce its new designation as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement®. The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care-which expanded recently to include more robust quality measures focused on improved patient health and safety.

The Coon Joint Replacement Institute performed over 1,200 minimally invasive joint replacements in 2012. Dr. Coon, founder of the institute, pioneered Quadsparing™ total knee replacement, a minimally invasive technique that may reduce blood loss and enable a quicker recovery. Becker’s Review named Dr. Coon as one of the 125 outstanding knee surgeons in the country, and St. Helena Hospital among the 1% of hospitals having great orthopedic programs.

"Blue Distinction Centers set themselves apart by adhering to best practices in patient safety and surgical care and producing consistently strong outcomes with fewer complications," says Marcus Thygeson, MD., Senior Vice President and Chief Health Officer for health care services at Blue Shield of California. "Blue Shield of California is pleased to recognize the high-quality care this hospital and physicians deliver."

Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications than their peers. "We are very proud of our extremely low infection rate and transfusion rate," notes Dr. Coon. "Our patients are typically walking within hours after surgery and discharged the next day."
