Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, both personal trainers with the Biggest Loser reality franchise, will not be making an appearance in Mendocino County. Still, you may notice your neighbors, friends and coworkers becoming a lot more active in the weeks ahead!

To inspire employees to adopt healthier lifestyle habits, the County of Mendocino, Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital (HMH), Mendocino Coast District Hospital (MCDH), and Ukiah Valley Medical Center (UVMC) have partnered together in a spring wellness campaign to offer a comprehensive countywide "Biggest Loser" weight loss challenge.

The Biggest Loser Challenge is loosely based on the popular reality TV show. The goal of the challenge is to educate Mendocino county employee participants about lifestyle changes that can help with weight loss and ultimately improve overall health. The 12 week challenge begins May 6 and ends July 28. The hospitals and County are encouraging teams of 3 - 6 participants to join forces, come up with a team name and motivate each other through friendly competition and get their Wellness on!

"It is exciting to see our Mendocino County communities come together to improve the health of our employees through this fun and creative challenge," HMH CEO Rick Bockmann said. "I am cheering on each individual participant to reach their own personal goals. Everyone, including our entire County can lose to be a winner!"

Over the course of the 12 week program, HMH will host weekly Wellness Challenges, and a monthly support group class to support employees in meeting weight loss goals through healthy eating, stress management and an active lifestyle. The challenges and support classes are open to all staff, whether registered as a Biggest Loser team member or not. While not everyone needs to lose weight, we can all make changes to improve our health. As an added incentive, prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams with the largest percent of weight loss as well as to the top 3 individuals with the most impressive percent of weight loss.

UVMC CEO, Gwen Matthews, is delighted about the challenge, "As caregivers who work long hours, it’s not always easy to spend the same amount of time caring for ourselves. It makes perfect sense as one of the largest employers in Mendocino County that we encourage our greatest assets, our people—to participate in healthy activities to help them Live Younger Longer. We are delighted to work with the County, HMH and MCDH and know that their employees are participating alongside ours in making positive lifestyle choices."

"The County saw a need to address the weight epidemic plaguing the nation, including Mendocino County," said Board of Supervisors chairman 5th District Supervisor Dan Hamburg. "We are excited to share in the Biggest Loser Challenge in partnership with Ukiah Valley Medical Center, Frank R. Howard Hospital and Mendocino Coast District Hospital for the health and well-being of our employees, their families and all members of the community."

So, if you see your neighbors, friends, or family member increasing their activity level encourage them. Also you don't have to be an employee to get healthy as our community has several options and activities provided by the communities each of us live in that can help you become the Biggest Loser.
