WWGH Urges You to Take Charge of Your Heart Health in February

Walla Walla General Hospital encourages you to take charge of your heart health during February’s American Heart Month.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in America. One in three deaths in women (1 in 4 in men) is a result of this preventable disease, according to the American Heart Association. There’s a reason why heart disease is called the silent killer. It can take you completely by surprise--but it doesn’t have to.

Take charge of your health this month by joining these heart healthy efforts led by Walla Walla General Hospital and Adventist Health:

  • Know Your Five Lifesaving Numbers. Every Thursday during February, WWGH will offer FREE blood pressure, waist size and weight checks. Our lab will also offer a cholesterol panel and blood sugar screening. The lab tests require a 12-hour fast prior to the test and cost $25.
  • Dine Out Heart Smart. We are partnering with local restaurants to help you eat heart healthy. Look for the specially marked dishes and support our community partners, as well as patients in our cardiac rehab program through these donations.
  • Wear Red for Women. WWGH employees wear red on Friday, Feb. 1 to raise awareness for heart disease in women. Join us!
  • Stop Smoking. People who smoke a pack a day more than double their risk of heart attack. Join our seven-session stop smoking class beginning Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. on the WWGH campus.
  • Learn CPR. Stop by one of our hands-only CPR stations in downtown Walla Walla from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Look for us on February 5 at the former Christian Supply Store; on February 13 in the Land Title Company plaza; and February 28 in Macy’s.
  • Raise a Heart Healthy Family. Most heart attacks happen in adults but the process begins in childhood. Learn simple and immediate ways to help your children be active and choose the right foods at a free class Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the YMCA. Childcare is provided in partnership with The Mom’s Network.
