- Howard Memorial Hospital's (HMH) Physical Therapy Department has expanded its offerings to include treatment for an assortment of health concerns common in women."Talking about things like vaginal pain, incontinence, and other conditions might be embarrassing, but the truth is, pain is never normal and your health care provider can't help you if you don't speak up!" said physical therapist Odessa McHart who recently completed specialized training to help patients with these conditions. "There are five types of urinary incontinence and 40% of adult women suffer from at least one type, but because we don't talk about it, the people suffering have no idea how normal they are," she said.
The HMH Physical Therapy Department can help women with incontinence, pelvic/vaginal pain, prenatal and postpartum musculoskeletal pain, osteoporosis, rehabilitation following breast surgery, lymphedema (localized fluid retention and tissue swelling), conditions specific to the female athlete, fibromyalgia and chronic pain, wellness, and exercise.
With a doctor's order, patients can take advantage of this non-invasive approach to healing. Physical therapists work with a person's medical team to create a plan personalized for each person's needs. McHart plans to visit local doctors' offices and provide detailed information about HMH's new service. However, she encouraged women who are suffering to speak up and not wait for their doctor to inquire about this type of pain.
She'll share more information Tuesday, January 10 at 9:00 a.m. when she is interviewed by Dr. Marvin Trotter on Mind Body and Health, a local radio program on KZYX/Z (90.7 FM Philo, 91.5 FM Willits & Ukiah, 88.1 FM Fort Bragg).
She noted that the HMH Physical Therapy Department is open Monday through Friday and is located at 46 Madrone St. in Willits. For more information, call 707-456-3141
