Coon Joint Replacement Institute Opens San Francisco Office As Convenience To Bay Area Patients And Residents

Office Is Located In Marina District’s Renowned Stone Clinic

ST. HELENA, Calif., — St. Helena Hospital’s Coon Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI) has opened a San Francisco Office at the prestigious Stone Clinic to provide more convenient service to a growing patient population in the Bay Area, CJRI founder Thomas Coon, M.D. announced today.

“Our new Marina District office will enable us to better serve our Bay Area patients who need surgical follow-up visits and consultations,” said Dr. Coon. “Having a San Francisco office improves the patient experience by significantly reducing travel time.”

The CJRI Surgical Team

Using highly specialized instruments, which he developed and patented, Dr. Coon performs a breakthrough alternative to traditional knee replacement called minimally invasiveQuadSparing™ total knee arthroplasty. He was a pioneer in the use of MAKO robotic surgery and helped design and introduce the first robotically optimized MAKO implants. Dr. Coon has performed more than 7,000 total and partial replacement surgeries during his career and trains physicians worldwide in his techniques.

Dr. Coon’s colleagues, Board Certified orthopedic surgeons Adam Freedhand, MD and John Velyvis, M.D. will also be available by appointment at the San Francisco office to see patients.

Dr. Freedhand is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement of the hip, knee and shoulder. His practice focuses on minimally invasive joint replacement surgery using the latest state of the art technologies including computer-assisted navigation and robotic-assisted partial knee replacement.

Named Physician of the Year in orthopedic surgery for 2010 by Who’s Who, Dr. Velyvis is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive knee and hip replacement surgery and is highly regarded for his work in computer-assisted navigation for joint replacements. His expertise includes robotic-assisted partial knee replacements (the MAKOPlasty® procedure), partial and total knee and hip replacements, complex revision knee and hip replacements, and knee arthroscopy.

The Stone Clinic

“I’m delighted that Dr. Coon and his fellow CJRI surgeons have become our neighbors,” said Stone Clinic founder Kevin Stone, MD. The Stone Clinic was established in 1988 by orthopedic surgeon Kevin R. Stone, MD, renowned for developing techniques for biologic treatments of arthritic joints for patients at the stages before they need a joint replacement.  Dr. Stone is the inventor of the Collagen Meniscus Implant (biologic cartilage replacement) and co-founder of ReGen Biologics, Inc. and founder of Aperion Biologics, Inc. He holds over 50 U. S. patents and is the developer of the popular glucosamine supplement, Joint Juice.

Commitment To Comprehensive, Accessible Patient Service

According to St. Helena Hospital President and CEO Terry Newmyer, opening the San Francisco office reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing a comprehensive continuum of services that are customer-oriented and accessible.“ We’re dedicated to improving health by partnering with the communities we serve — and a growing segment of our community is here in the San Francisco Bay Area,” he said.
