Hospital Hosts Mammogram Spa Day

When it comes to taking care of your breast health, no excuse will do. And to help encourage Tillamook County women to schedule a screening mammogram during breast cancer awareness month in October, Tillamook County General Hospital is hosting a special mammography “Spa Day.” Patients who schedule their screening mammogram for October 13, 2010, will also receive a free, rejuvenating, 10-minute neck and shoulder massage along with tea and chocolates, in a soothing spa-like atmosphere.

Appointments for a screening mammogram on “Spa Day” may be scheduled by calling 503-815-2292. This special promotion is available for women age 40 and older whose previous mammograms were more than a year ago, who have no history of breast cancer in the past two years and who have no current symptoms.

Because regular screening with mammograms saves lives, the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation all recommend that women have a yearly mammogram starting at age 40. A screening mammogram takes 2 x-ray pictures of each breast. The procedure is quick and easy, thanks to digital mammography technology and the FDA-approved MammoPad cushion that creates a warmer, softer experience.

Excuses for not getting a mammogram include lack of time, discomfort of the procedure and absence of breast cancer symptoms. The facts related to time are that a mammogram usually only takes about 20 minutes and Tillamook Hospital offers evening appointments. For those using the excuse of discomfort, the MammoPad foam cushion is the answer. And early breast tumors – which mammograms can detect – may be too small to feel and cause no symptoms. Since most insurance plans, along with Medicare and Medicaid, cover mammograms, cost should not be an issue. There are also funds available through the Tillamook County Breast Health Coalition to help with mammogram costs.

Regular health screenings are an important part of living well. To make an appointment for a screening mammogram at Tillamook Hospital, please call (503)-815-2292.
