November is American Diabetes Month; The Wellness Center at SJCH to Join Efforts

Health Alert November is American Diabetes Month, a time to bring even greater awareness and attention to the seriousness of diabetes, its deadly complications and the importance of proper diabetes control. As the only hospital in Kern County with an American Diabetes Association (ADA) Nationally Certified Center for Diabetes Education, The Wellness Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) gladly joins the efforts to put this serious condition in the spotlight.

Throughout the month, the ADA will conduct activities and encourage others across the country to raise awareness about diabetes and its complications. The Wellness Center at SJCH is committed to providing innovative diabetes education and counseling.

Type 2 diabetes has become an issue of particularly great concern, specifically because it is often connected to weight problems and as such, can be prevented and/or treated without medication, according to Kira Wiggins, director of The Wellness Center.

“If a person is overweight, losing just 10 percent of their body mass can have a great impact on their body’s ability to regulate blood sugar,” Wiggins said.
