What's Happening at SJCH - July 2010

Health Alert

ARE YOUR KIDS SAFE ON 4TH OF JULY? WE CAN HELP
Kids love fireworks; there’s no question about that. While a hands-off policy can be tough to enforce, educating your kids on proper fireworks safety is one way to proactively prevent burns or other injuries that can result from accidents involving fireworks. At SJCH’s Grossman Burn Center, our experts are loaded with tips on fireworks safety. And since July is National Firework’s Eye Safety Month (not to mention that little holiday on the 4th), now’s the perfect time for a fireworks safety primer.

IMMUNIZATIONS PARTNERS WITH FAMILY FILM FESTIVAL
On July 6, SJCH’s Children’s Mobile Immunizations Program will hold a free immunizations clinic in collaboration with the annual summer Family Film Festival. Since the program’s inception in 1996, SJCH has immunized more than 50,000 kids in Kern County. This is the program’s first foray into Southwest Bakersfield – just in time for getting kids immunized for school!
Tuesday, July 6, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Marketplace Parking Lot, west of the Edwards Theater

SJCH PROVIDES ON-SITE MASSAGES FOR EMPLOYEES
At SJCH our nurses and caregivers are dedicated to our mission of providing whole-person care to the community – but sometimes our staff needs a little care themselves. That’s why SJCH has partnered with six local massage therapists to provide low-cost, 5-10 minute massages to employees. The therapists are stationed on nursing floors multiple times weekly, while also making regular visits to outlying departments.

MORE THAN FLOWERS: HOSPITAL GIFT SHOP BOOMING
Hospital gift shops are traditionally known for standard flower arrangements and simple greetings cards. But since August 2008, the SJCH Gift Gallery has been selling high-end merchandise – such as the always-popular Tyler Candles – to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. The best part? The generated funds get put right back into the hospital. Among the Gift Gallery’s most frequent customers are busy employees who often spend their break time perusing the boutique. Recently, the Gift Gallery hired Kathy Salyers – who has experience managing shops with high-end décor – to further increase the Gift Gallery’s product line and appeal. Obviously, this is no ordinary hospital gift shop.
