Mammography Spa Day at TCGH

It's a sad but true fact: Tillamook County lags far behind the Oregon statewide average for percentage of women age 40 and older who have had a mammogram within the last 2 years (Tillamook County 55%; Oregon 73%). With breast cancer second only to lung cancer in cancer-related deaths and with the Pacific Northwest tagged as having the highest rates of breast cancer in the United States, early detection of breast cancer is vital to ensuring women have more treatment options and a higher success rate with treatments.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women, beginning at the age of 40, have a screening mammogram annually. A screening mammogram takes 2 x-ray pictures of each breast. The procedure is quick and easy, thanks to digital mammography technology and the FDA-approved MammoPad cushion that creates a warmer, softer experience.

To help encourage Tillamook County women to schedule a screening mammogram during breast cancer awareness month in October, Tillamook County General Hospital is hosting a special mammography "Spa Day." Patients who schedule their screening mammogram for October 20 will also receive a free, rejuvenating, 10-minute neck and shoulder massage along with tea and chocolates, in a soothing spa-like atmosphere.

Appointments for a screening mammogram on this special day may be scheduled by calling 503-815-2292. This special promotion is available for women age 40 and older whose previous mammograms were more than a year ago, who have no history of breast cancer in the past two years and who have no current symptoms.

"Early breast cancer detection helps saves lives," states Larry Davy, hospital CEO. "Tillamook County General Hospital's Radiology and Rehabilitation staff have teamed up to present this special "Spa Day" with the hope that more women in Tillamook County will be motivated to make their appointment for this important health screening sooner rather than later."
