White Memorial Medical Center Named Center of Excellence

White Memorial Medical Center has been chosen as one of six centers of excellence by cardiac electrophysiology equipment manufacturer Biosense Webster Inc., a Johnson & Johnson Company. The hospital has been selected as one of only six “Paroxysmal Afib Centers of Excellence” in the nation, and the only one on the West Coast.

This honor means that physicians from across the country will visit WMMC once a month through the end of the year for observation and education on the Biosense Webster equipment used in the WMMC cardiac electrophysiology (EP) lab. EP is the study of the electrical system of the heart and irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). Paroxysmal afibrillation, or afib, is one type of arrhythmia.

The education will be under the direction of Koonlawee Nademanee, M.D. Dr. Nademanee, who recently joined the hospital’s medical staff, created software to work with the equipment to perform his breakthrough technique for treating atrial fibrillation. His work in this area has captured the attention of the global medical community and is drawing patients to WWMC from around the world.

Electrophysiology is a key area of focus for WMMC. The hospital has submitted plans to build an arrhythmia center on the ground floor of the Specialty Care Tower, which will house two new EP labs. The center is slated to open in the second quarter of 2010.
