Castle Medical Center Receives `Oihana Maika`i Award

Castle Medical Center has received the ‘Oihana Maika’i award for organizational excellence. The hospital was recently given the prestigious `Oihana Maika`i (Endeavors of Excellence) Purple Lei Award from the Hawaii Award of Excellence (HAE) program. The `Oihana Maika`i award is the HAE’s highest award, and the Purple Lei is the first step toward three possible levels of excellence.

The HAE program is based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which is administered by the US Department of Commerce and is designed to enable organizations to systematically improve performance and capabilities to achieve world-class performance.

"We are deeply honored to obtain this recognition from the Hawaii Award of Excellence program. The Baldrige Healthcare criteria are some of the highest standards of hospital performance in America,” said CMC President and CEO Kevin Roberts. “Receiving the 'Oihana Maika'i award helps to validate our initiatives around mission-driven patient care, quality and safety, and responsible management of our limited resources. We will continue to strive for even better results for our community and, with the Lord's help and blessing, these objectives will be achieved."

CMC received the award following a survey by the HAE that focused on leadership, strategic planning, patient focus, information handling, employee engagement, process management and results.

The HAE cited several key reasons for giving CMC the award, some of which include: a clearly stated and consistently positioned strategic planning process; patient-focused excellence through processes that develop an understanding of patients’ needs; an excellent work environment; and a leadership team that guides and sustains the organization through personal involvement.

The HAE program is administered through the American Society for Quality, Hawaii Section. It is one of more than 40 state and local award programs based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
