Castle Medical Center Introduces New Program for Heart Patients

Castle Medical Center recently debuted a new cardiac service. The transtelephonic pacemaker and defibrillator interrogation program allows patients to check their pacemaker devices and monitor heart function from home using a plug-in interrogation unit that relays information to Castle through a phone line. The information is reviewed by technicians and physicians at Castle who advise patients if they need to see a physician to have their pacemaker adjusted.

Castle is the only hospital in Hawaii currently offering this program, according to Ron Sanderson, director of Castle’s Cardiopulmonary department. “The remote interrogation system doesn’t eliminate the need to see your doctor for check-ups, but it’s particularly beneficial to those with limited mobility or full-time jobs since it can reduce the frequency of those visits.”
