Adventist Health Launches AdvanceMD Program

Adventist Heatlth recently launched Advance MD in an effort to attract and retain the most qualified and capable physicians whose interests are aligned with the company’s mission and goals. The new program will help Adventist Health to identify and establish long-term relationships with residents and fellows by providing them with financial compensation when they agree to work with Adventist Health and support its mission.

According to Scott Reiner, senior vice president of Adventist Health, the corporate Physician Services department will work with system hospitals to identify critical opportunities and locate and obtain commitments from residents/fellows up to two years before the completion of their training. Once hospitals interview and select candidates, contracts are signed, stipend payments begin, and the candidates finish training, relocate and begin to practice. The stipend money is forgiven over a set time period once the recruitment agreement has ended.

The AdvanceMD program was designed to be a win-win for both Adventist Health and physicians. It will ensure that hospitals are able to retain physicians who will address the greatest community needs and increase the likelihood that they will be dedicated to the system’s mission, vision and values. In addition, it will provide income to residents/fellows that can be used for discretionary purposes or loan repayment.

Later this year, the Physician Recruitment department will assist hospitals with formulation and prioritization of community needs for 2010. The AdvanceMD program is scheduled to be fully operational by January 2009.
